We are proud of our strong community relationships throughout
central Georgia. Macon itself is relatively small with a population of 100,000 while that of central
Georgia is over 250,000. Nursing participated in the creation of our vision and mission, and
consequently is vested in its fulfillment. One way in which this occurs is through partnerships
with non-profit and for-profit agencies, churches, schools, businesses, and other hospitals to fulfill our vision and mission.

Critical Care
family lodging:
CC nurses identified
a problem for families staying overnight in the CC waiting room.
Hotels in the area have negotiated reduced rates for families of
patients at MCCG to help address this issue. Some families are
unable to afford these options. The CC nurses and Patient
Representatives, excellent resource personnel at MCCG who
communicate with & support families in waiting rooms, discussed
their concerns, and shared them with the Patient Representative
Supervisor, Trennis Dumas. When The Vistas Apartments offered an
apartment, she opened the dialogue on behalf of Nursing.
Families are able to stay for weeks at a time if necessary. Our
MEDS Messenger weekly newsletter captured the event. Nurse
Directors Gwen Smith and Cindy Poole represented Nursing to
thank the Vistas for their generous offer.

Out-of-Town guests
visiting family members in our critical care units now have a
place to call home for as long as they need. Too often, patients
are far from home leaving family members without the means to
stay in a hotel for the duration of their family member’s
treatment. Last month, however, the Vistas Apartments on
Arkwright Road offered these family members not only a fully
furnished, two-bedroom apartment, but all the necessities and
conveniences for living: food, linens, utilities, telephone, and
cable service. The Vistas approached The Medical Center in
selecting a patient’s family to live in this apartment. The
Vistas will not limit the number of days a family may live in
the home, and when the patient is released from critical care,
this apartment will go to another deserving family. The Vistas
provides this gift through their Open Arms Foundation
specifically created for families in medical crisis. A number of
local and state organizations have partnered with the Vistas to
provide the free services. They include Colony Furniture
Leasing, Accessories, Etc., Cox Communications, and Auto Super
Lube. Mid-American Apartment Communities began the Open Arms
Foundation in 1994. Since that time, the Open Arms Foundation
has served more than 1179 families by providing 9354 weeks or
65,478 nights of comforting rest.
