MUSM Partnership in CRNA Program:
The shortage of
CRNAs at MCCG mirrored the national shortage. In 2004, MUSM
collaborated with MCCG to develop an on site academic Master of
Science in Anesthesia (MSA) degree program clinically based on
our main campus. MUSM felt that MCCG would provide the critical
clinical link needed to enhance the application of critical
skills. Since its inception, the program has enjoyed a 100%
graduation and certification rate. Of the first graduating
class, 88% (seven of eight graduates) obtained employment at
MCCG. The CRNA Program, now managed by Pat D’errico, MSN, RN,
FACHE, VP Surgical Services, has grown. There were 106 qualified
applicants for the 16 openings in the class starting in August
of 2009. In December, 2008, our only CRNA opening was filled by
a graduate. The CRNA program has proven to be a recruitment tool
attracting nurses from outside Central Georgia to work with them
for 1 – 3 years prior to applying to the CRNA program.
Currently, Director Cindy Poole, RN, has six RNs accepted into a
CRNA program, five of whom will attend our program at MCCG.

Schools of Nursing (SON)
partnerships:
We co-sponsor events with area
SON. One fun-filled event, “Nursing Around the World at MCCG”
was designed to introduce junior and senior nursing students to
staff nurses and leaders from various MCCG departments.
International nurses made snacks representative of their country
of origin.

Another collaborative effort
offered by MCCG involves on site recruitment events to
disseminate information and resources to staff interested in
beginning a career in nursing or advancing their current degree.
Participating providers reflect a broad spectrum ranging from
local and regional SON as well as on line distant learning
programs. Additional recruitment events target students
interested in post graduation employment at MCCG. We know of
several nursing students who chose MCCG because of its Magnet®
designation. Student interest piqued via co-sponsored events has
proven a powerful way to tilt the scales in our behalf as we
compete for graduate nursing students.
Clinical Affiliations:
Our clinical affiliations with
SON provide quite meaningful partnerships which are very
important to our nurses. We engage area SON in dialogue and
annual meetings. Written contracts are developed, to establish
clinical sites and classroom space. Clinical rotations provide
opportunities for nurses to precept and mentor students.
Clinical Affiliation contracts and placements are coordinated by
Sherry Haizlip, MSN, RN-BC, and Rebecca Jones, RN, of the LC and
DBEs in the patient care areas. The SON also encourage students
to apply for Nurse Extern (NE) and New Graduate positions. In
2008, we had over 150 participate NE II and NE III roles,
observing and shadowing RNs. In 2008, of 168 Graduate Nurses
hired from 24 different SON, 81% came from our clinical
affiliations and 70% had participated in the NE program. Clearly
the NE program and clinical affiliations are powerful
recruitment tools and attest to positive student / NE
experiences.
